Education Issues

The Other Talk is about Australian families talking openly about alcohol and other drugs.  It's an initial conversation and an ongoing understanding that when it comes to alcohol and other drugs, no question is too silly and no topic is off limits.  The Other Talk

Dear Premier,  Now more than ever, a good education is a prerequisite for success in life.   Open Letter to the Premier , signed by Parents Victoria and others.

Parents Victoria feels it is important that we hear your views on the draft legislation of the State Government to enact the current legislation to fine parents $70 who do not have reasonable excuse for their son or daughter being absent from school.

Parents Victoria is yet to see the full details, but it is important to know your reactions, support, questions or concerns you may have and which we can raise with State Government officials going forward - before these powers are passed.

Parents Victoria respects most parents do the right thing, but some parents don't.  The State Government assures us they are targeting the serial offenders who don't care where their children are.   Will this threat to fine make a difference?

Victoria Primary Principals Association (VPA) President, Gabrielle Leigh said the new procedures must be supported by a campaign.

DEECD have had the "It's not OK to say away" campaign for some years - but how does that reach the parents who 'don't care' in the eyes of the Government?

Please share your thoughts with us (email or visit Parents Victoria Facebook).

Further reading "Improving School Attendance" alerts that amendments to the Education Training and Reform Act 2006 are proposed to allow for more effective enforcement of penalties.  Information includes opportunity to make submissions on four exposure drafts.
