This media release from Parents Victoria gives our reaction to Tuesday's State Budget.

Budget is great news for our public schools

Parents Victoria (PV) advocates for fair, simple and transparent funding of State Schools because the current school funding model does not provide adequately for our most vulnerable students.

PV is mindful the driving force of yesterday’s budget is predominantly to get the Victorian economy going again and create jobs for all Victorian workers impacted by the pandemic.

This greater investment in public schools is heartening and in keeping with PV's vision "A fully supported Victorian public education system meeting the needs of every student, where parents’ voices are sought, heard and valued” said PV’s Executive Officer, Gail McHardy.

“The pandemic has really provoked the need to put the people first and the Victorian Government have committed this budget to this priority” she said.

Gail added “More new school builds and a funding boost to students with disabilities is warmly welcomed under the disability inclusion package. We wait to see how this additional funding translates to targeted support for the eligible students.

“Without seeing all the detail yet we are initially impressed that the students’ voice was heard and acted upon, with the funding provided to support the recommendations from the Review into Vocational and Applied Learning Pathways in Senior Secondary Schooling. Creating new jobs in our government schools to employ Jobs, Skills and Pathways Coordinators and Managers to support schools and students to facilitate industry engagement was certainly needed.

“Family engagement lifted significantly during the remote learning phase and the benefits of that engagement need to continue. PV believes strongly if the Victorian Government can advise us what program initiative can be utilised for employing Family Engagement Officers as a further resource in our schools that would be the cherry on top!”
