Parents Victoria CEO Gail McHardy is quoted in a recent Age article about school zoning.
According to the article, “Public schools will no longer be able to admit students outside their catchment area on curriculum grounds after school zoning rules were tightened in Victoria.”
Gail is quoted as follows:
Parents Victoria executive officer Gail McHardy said some public schools offer specialist programs that others do not, which makes them attractive to many parents.
But when those schools reach capacity, principals of popular schools are put in the difficult position of having to turn students away. Schools that do not offer specialist programs can also lose students, and therefore funding.
“It makes schools the meat in the sandwich about who can come in and who can’t,” McHardy said.
